What you need to know
- Place all green or hard waste out on your kerb by 6 am on Monday 17 March for the suburbs listed above. All areas outside of the ones listed above are encouraged to have their clean up waste on the kerb by Sunday 23 March at the latest.
- Please place cyclone-affected green and hard waste in separate neat piles on your kerb.
- Do not place items on the road or where it will impede regular household bin collections.
- Keep green waste and other waste separated. They will be collected by different trucks at different times.
- Collection will be from the kerb only. Council or its contractors are not able to enter private property or trim any vegetation on private property.
- Help us spread the word by telling your neighbour, friends and family about the kerbside collection.
Frequently asked questions
What are my options for cyclone-affected green or hard waste?
- Use Council’s free residential kerbside green and hard waste collection – skip the trip to the tip.
- Use your household bin collections as usual – use your regular green bin service for anything that can fit like leaves, light debris, fronds or unpackaged food waste or your red and yellow bin service for hard waste items that fit.
- Take cyclone-affected waste to the tip for free between Friday 14 March and Sunday 23 March – we recommend avoiding the tip where possible and choose the kerbside pickup instead.
Note: To drop off for free at the tip, you will need present proof of residency in the Tweed Shire (e.g. driver’s licence) at the weighbridge. All waste must be from the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
What waste materials can I dispose of?
You can make use of these free services for any green or hard waste that was affected by the cyclone. Council will only pickup waste associated with the cyclone.
Keep green waste and other waste separate. They will be collected by different trucks at different times.
Do I have to place all waste on the kerbside?
Yes, collection will be from the kerb only. Council or its contractors are not able to enter private property or trim any vegetation on private property.
If you are unable to move the waste yourself, we recommend asking your neighbours, friends or local businesses.
Can I leave heavier or bulkier items at the kerb?
Yes, however please note that we may not be able to collect certain heavier or bulkier green or hard waste items in the first run.
Please be patient and we will return for all green and hard cyclone-affected waste.
My items were missed – what do I do?
If the schedule indicates your suburb has been completed and your cyclone-impacted items were not collected, call us on 02 6670 2400.
Who is eligible for the residential kerbside clean up and free drop off at the tip?
The kerbside clean up includes all residential and rural rated properties.
For rural properties only cyclone-impacted waste directly around the house yard is eligible. If you don’t get a regular household bin collection service and you need cyclone-impacted green or hard waste collected, please call us on 02 6670 2400.
Properties choosing to use the free Tip drop off option are reminded they need to provide proof of residency, e.g. driver’s licence.
I live at a caravan parks or mobile home park, can I use the kerbside collection?
Kerbside collection for cyclone-impacted green and hard waste is being offered to residents of caravan parks and mobile home parks. Please liaise with your park manager to ensure items are left at the most appropriate kerbside location.
Note: It does not include taking items to the tip for free, only residential properties with proof of address can use this option.
Why are businesses not eligible for the residential kerbside clean up or free drop off at the tip?
Commercial businesses are not eligible as the Disaster Recovery Funding criteria determine what Council can and cannot provide. Commercial properties are excluded under these arrangements, however there are alternative government support and assistance options available.

What can I do with any waste that is not cyclone-impacted?
If you have any larger items that are not cyclone-impacted and won’t fit in your bin, households with a domestic red bin collection can access the on-call kerbside collection.
Please note the criteria for using this service and use our waste wizard to check what goes where.
