Ex-Cyclone Alfred community clean up
A Shire wide residential clean-up of green and hard waste following the impacts of Ex-Cyclone Alfred is underway and will take a minimum of 8 weeks to complete.
Only legitimate cyclone-affected waste can be collected.
Please be patient – we will get to all areas, however it will take time and we cannot logistically schedule suburbs to a set day.

What you need to know
- Place all green and hard waste in separate neat piles – they will be collected by different trucks at different times.
- Do not place items on the road or where it will affect regular household bin collections.
- Collection will be from the kerb only. Council or its contractors are not able to enter private property or trim any vegetation on private property.
- Help us spread the word by telling your neighbour, friends and family about the residential clean-up.
Frequently asked questions
What are my options for cyclone-affected waste and how long will it take?
Due to the scale of the clean-up (we are covering ALL of the Tweed), we cannot logistically schedule a set date for collection.
We know this is not ideal, but our crews are working as hard and as fast as they can. We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation by only placing legitimate cyclone-impacted waste on the kerb. Your options are:
- Use Council’s free cyclone-impacted residential green and hard waste collection.
- Use your household bin collections as usual – use your regular green bin service for anything that can fit like leaves, light debris, fronds or unpackaged food waste or your red and yellow bin service for hard waste items that fit.
- Take waste to Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre (the tip) - standard fees apply.
What waste materials can I dispose of?
You can make use of this free service for any green or hard waste that was affected by the cyclone. Keep green waste and other waste separate, they will be collected by different trucks at different times.
Certain items may require specialist equipment or machinery and may be left for collection at a later date.
Please be patient and we will return for all green and hard cyclone-affected waste.
Do I have to place all waste on the kerbside?
Yes, collection will be from the kerb only. Council or its contractors are not able to enter private property or trim any vegetation on private property.
If you are unable to move the waste yourself, we recommend asking your neighbours, friends or local businesses.
Who is eligible for the community clean-up?
The community clean-up includes all residential and rural rated properties, including residents of caravan parks and mobile home parks such as over 50s resorts – please liaise with your park manager to ensure items are left at the most appropriate kerbside location.
For rural properties, only cyclone-impacted waste directly around the house yard is eligible.
If you don’t get a regular household bin collection service and you need cyclone-impacted green or hard waste collected, call us on 02 6670 2400.
Why are businesses not eligible for the residential kerbside clean up?
Commercial businesses, including charities and not-for-profits, are not eligible for the residential collection as the Disaster Recovery Funding criteria determine what Council can and cannot provide.
There are alternative government support and assistance options available, find out more about business emergency recovery and support.
My items were missed – what do I do?
If your suburb is marked as completed and your cyclone-impacted items were placed out in time but not collected, call us on 02 6670 2400.
