What to flush

What to flush

Only toilet paper, pee and poo belong in the loo

Toilets aren't rubbish bins.

Flushing things like wipes, tissues, paper towels, cotton buds and dental floss can block your home plumbing and our wastewater pipes.

Sewage overflows can harm our natural environment and public health.

Unclogging blockages and repairing damaged pipes can be expensive.

Protect your loo and our sewerage systems too

Keep your household plumbing, the Tweed’s wastewater pipes and our natural environment healthy.

The only things that belong in your loo:

  • toilet paper
  • pee
  • poo.

Puke is okay, too.

Wipes experimentWe placed ‘flushable’ wipes, ‘biodegradable’ wipes, ‘non-flushable’ wipes and tissues into these jars in June 2017. They still haven’t broken down.

What not to flush

  • Wipes
  • Tissues
  • Paper towels
  • Cotton buds
  • Dental floss
  • Nappies
  • Condoms
  • Tampons and pads
  • Rubbish

They belong in the rubbish bin, not your toilet.

In the Tweed we have 3 bins – red, green and yellow lid bins. Use Council’s waste wizard to find out what goes in each bin.

What about the kitchen and laundry?

Fats, oils and grease can combine with wipes and other ‘unflushables’ to form dreaded ‘fatbergs’ – masses of yuk that cause sewage overflows.

Take a look at this video from The Guardian Australia – How ‘flushable’ wet wipes have created an environmental catastrophe.

Please never tip oil and grease down the drain.

Place food scraps in your green-lid bin so Council can turn them into top-quality compost.

Also, never pour medicines and chemicals down the drain.

The waste wizard can help you sort out what goes where.

If you have an insinkerator, use a green-lid bin instead.
