Go solar at home

Lots of Tweed residents have already switched to clean, renewable solar energy, with 53% of dwellings now with a solar PV installation. This puts the Tweed in the top 10% of local government areas in Australia. Well done!

There is still more we can do to see increased solar capacity on homes, green energy for strata, renters and businesses. Council is also doing its part, continuing to install solar on its facilities as part of its Renewable Energy Action Plan(PDF, 847KB).

Find out more about the benefits of solar and what you need to know about installing or upgrading your solar for your home or business.

Benefits of solar

Installing solar PV panels on your home or business can provide financial and environmental benefits, including:

  • reduce your electricity bill
  • increase your use of renewable, clean energy
  • reduce your carbon footprint
  • add value to your home
  • average investment payback 3-7 years, depending on usage and size of system
  • longevity of panels

Considerations

  • Up front costs – rebates may be available; The Australian Government's small scale renewable energy scheme can help to reduce your costs.
  • Consider when you use most electricity (daylight hours or night time).
  • Roof suitability – roof quality, shade/sun exposure.

Battery storage

Solar batteries can protect you from energy price rises and blackouts and can reduce your use of the grid by up to 95%. Prices are continually becoming more affordable, but it will depend on your situation and usage patterns to decide if batteries are cost effective for you.

See guides for batteries and inverters and battery storage.

Thinking of hybrid or off-grid?

A hybrid system allows ongoing access to the grid, with associated network costs.

Off-grid systems need to have enough capacity in solar panels and battery storage to provide power during several days of cloud or rain. This NSW Government fact sheet gives an overview of what you need to consider.

In this video, Tweed experts discuss how you can benefit from solar and battery storage, how to avoid pitfalls and how to find a good installer.

Green power

If solar isn't for you, you can switch to green power. Contact your electricity supplier and tell them you want electricity from renewable sources such as solar, wind, biomass and hydro.

Almost all electricity retailers in Australia have a GreenPower Accredited product that lets you purchase between 10 and 100% of your electricity from a renewable source.
