Support in Tweed for COVID-19 Greater Brisbane lockdown

Mayor of Tweed urges affected residents to stay home

Mayor of Tweed Chris Cherry has supported the swift action of the Queensland Government in introducing a 3-day lockdown of the Greater Brisbane area in response to a COVID-19 case.

On Friday, the Queensland Government announced a 3-day lockdown of Greater Brisbane effective from 6pm Friday 8 January 2021 to at least 6pm Monday 11 January 2021 (Qld time).

The lockdown covers the local government areas of:

• Brisbane City Council

• Logan City Council

• Ipswich City Council

• Moreton Bay Regional Council

• Redlands City Council.

The NSW Government yesterday issued a Public Health Order which states that any NSW resident who has visited the Greater Brisbane area since 2 January 2021 is to stay at home until 6pm (NSW time) Monday 11 January 2021.

In addition to the Greater Brisbane area, the NSW Public Health Order has included the local government areas of Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim and Somerset.

“I urge Tweed residents to comply with the Public Health Order and stay at home if you have been to any of the eight Queensland local government areas outlined by the NSW Government,” Cr Cherry said.

“I know these restrictions can be inconvenient and sometimes costly to local businesses and individuals, however they are put in place to keep us all safe and protect us from a potential further outbreak of COVID-19 in the region.

“The new UK COVID-19 strain, which was detected in an individual in Brisbane, is reportedly 70 per cent more virulent than the existing strain.

“Hopefully, these timely actions by the Queensland and NSW Governments will be enough to stop the spread from this latest incident.

“It is also important to continue to physically distance, maintain good hygiene practices and if you have any symptoms, get tested for COVID-19.

“While supporting our local businesses, keep using QR codes to check in,” she said.
