Reduce your Christmas waste

Tips for a more sustainable festive period

Tweed residents are being asked to do their bit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help the environment as a Christmas present to the planet this holiday season.

Last year the community sent 1257 tonnes of red bin waste to landfill in just four weeks during the holiday period (two weeks before Christmas and two weeks after).

This year, the goal for all of us is to reverse the trend.

By doing some really simple things, we can all play a major part in reducing waste, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and therefore help our environment.

Please check out our tips below and give one or more of them a go this holiday season.

Donate to a local charity including those that are part of the Mayoral Christmas Appeal which will benefit local organisations Fred’s Place, You Have A Friend and Tweed Valley Wildlife Carers. Visit www.tweed.nsw.gov.au/Christmas for more information.

Shop and buy locally to support our businesses and also reduce your carbon footprint. Goods and services made here in the Tweed means less transport kilometres and less packaging. Check out the Tweed Gift Guide at www.visitthetweed.com.au/giftguide/

Take advantage of the free recycling drop off program at the Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 3.45pm, weekends and public holidays 9am – 3.45pm and closed Christmas Day.

Encourage your family and friends to consider gifts that are recycled or contain recycled material.

Check out some great secondhand bargains at Tweed JUNKtion (the Tip Shop) at Stotts Creek. It is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 8:30am to 3pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 3pm. (closed public holidays).
