Adopting sustainable living practices around the home can not only save you money and benefit the environment but it could also win you a holiday in the Tweed.

The 2020 Sustainable Living Home Expo on Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 December is a free online event featuring interactive webinars and a virtual marketplace which you can access from the comfort of your own home.

Coordinated by Tweed Shire Council, the Home Expo will be a virtual event due to COVID-19 and will offer a wide range of sessions by experts to help reduce your carbon footprint and protect the environment.

From solar energy to reducing water use in the garden, keeping backyard chickens to gaining energy efficiency tips, there is a range of interesting topics on offer for Tweed residents with a focus on the practical actions each of us can take to be more sustainable.

There will be a virtual marketplace with a sample of local businesses and community groups that offer products and services to help make your home and lifestyle more environmentally friendly.

Event organiser and Council’s Sustainability Program Leader, Debbie Firestone, said the Home Expo event will provide practical tools and tips to measure the impact that each of us can have on protecting our environment and reducing our contribution to climate change.

“We are encouraging participants to describe what action they’ll take to reduce their environmental impacts. In the Tweed our average carbon footprint per person is nine tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year and during the Home Expo, we hope participants will help us meet our target to save 100 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions,” Ms Firestone said.

Mayor of Tweed Councillor Chris Cherry said the 2020 Sustainable Living Home Expo was a convenient way to not only find out how to reduce your living costs and carbon footprint, but also support local businesses along the way.

“We can all play a part in reducing our environmental impact by taking action around our homes,” Cr Cherry said.

“I love that this event will bring options, inspiration and ideas direct to participants, wherever you log in and best of all, you can choose local suppliers and environmental groups to be part of as you take action.”

Featuring passionate speakers, each experts in their respective fields, the free webinars on Tuesday 1 December will cover practical tips across a broad range of topics such as solar for tenants and homeowners, energy efficiency tips for all, a cane toad challenge, backyard beekeeping and guidance in calculating and reducing your carbon footprint.

On Wednesday 2 December, the program will help provide you with advice to create wildlife-friendly and waterwise gardens, keep healthy backyard chickens, learn basic tips for sustainable home designs, assess the suitability of electric vehicles and keep up to date on climate change.

By participating, you could also go in to the draw to win a holiday voucher for two nights’ accommodation in a Tweed Holiday Parks cabin valued at $350 by simply pledging to take action to reduce your environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions during this year’s event.
