Commonwealth Home Support Programs postponed

The Fun Activities for Banora Seniors (FABS) has been suspended for at least two weeks and another grant-funded seniors program postponed, as a precautionary step in response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) emergency.

Mayor of Tweed Katie Milne said the decision to suspend the FABS program will be reviewed on a week-by-week basis but is likely to be extended.

The programs funded by the Australian Government Department of Health, Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) for seniors have been postponed. Participants in any program which had started have been advised and other planned programs will not proceed at this stage.

The programs include: Shop Don’t Drop, Stand Together, MisterChef, Dementia Music Therapy, Art and Dementia Friends, Stretch Your Mind, Mature and Determined and Cultural Connection – Tweed Regional Museum.

“Many participants in the FABS and CHSP program are in the vulnerable age bracket. Suspending these programs is a precautionary measure aimed at protecting FABS participants, visitors, staff and volunteers,” she said.

“The health and safety of the FABS and CHSP program participants was of the utmost concern and top priority.

“We know there are growing concerns about COVID-19 and we are proactively taking measures to protect our customers and staff.

“With this in mind, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to suspend the delivery of these programs for the time being, effective immediately.

“We’ll be reviewing the plan to recommence with the programs over the coming weeks and we’ll update the community as we know more,’ she said.

The Banora Point Community Centre will remain open at this stage as NSW Health’s Baby Health Clinic is still operating out of the building.
