Funding helped Murwillumbah Community Garden grow from good to great
A new round of financial assistance for local, not-for-profit community groups and organisations in the Tweed is open for applications through Council’s Community Sponsorship Policy.
A total of $39,978 is available, to provide a financial boost for groups offering activities and projects that benefit the health and wellbeing of Tweed Shire residents.
The Murwillumbah Community Garden was one of the recipients of financial assistance from Tweed Shire Council’s 2018/2019 funding round which has helped them grow (literally) from good to great.
Secretary Jenny Unwin said the funds have paid for plantings, small tools and equipment, piping, tapware and garden beds for demonstration and workshop purposes.
“We're all so energised by what can be achieved with our small team of volunteers, from the community and the financial support we received to reach our goals,” Ms Unwin said.
Established in late 2016, the group have had to overcome significant hurdles such as waste removal and clearing exotic species but have now gone from strength to strength.
“We are really proud of our commitment to offering sound environmental and ecological outcomes throughout the planning and development of the garden to provide a safe, peaceful and educational precinct in Murwillumbah,” she said.
Tweed Shire Council provides a range of support and resources, both financial and in-kind to local community groups and organisations. This support is for activities and projects that benefit the health and wellbeing of Tweed Shire residents.
The successful recipients for the 2018/2019 were:
• Tweed Valley Rural and Community Advancement Co-Op received $10,000 for the Murwillumbah Community Garden project
• Victory House Rehabilitation Program received $5,000
• Support for New Mums Inc received $5,000
• Public Act Theatre Company received $2,600 for the Murwillumbah Mixed Ability Theatre Group
• Cabarita Youth Service received $7,000 for their Community Connections Program
