Acknowledgement of losses of homes and habitat in Tweed’s south-west

The Mayor of Tweed has written to the local Rural Fire Service branches and National Parks and Wildlife service to thank them for their ongoing efforts during the bushfire emergency.

With the backing of her fellow Councillors at a recent Council meeting, Councillor Katie Milne wrote to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of local volunteers and staff.

“Council acknowledges the loss of the two homes, damage to a third home, further loss of extensive fencing and outbuildings and loss of wildlife and important habitat due to the fires in the south-west of the Shire around Doon Doon and Commissioners Creek and the angst that the communities in these areas are experiencing due to the ongoing fire threat that is expected to continue until significant rain is predicted in late January,” Cr Milne said.

“We thank the staff and volunteers for their ongoing hard work, personal sacrifice and bravery in protecting and assisting the Tweed community and environment from the fires in our Shire,” she said.

The Mt Nardi fire has burnt 6629 hectares and is under control. A small fire at Byrrill Creek yesterday is also listed by the NSW Rural Fire Service as under control today.

There is a statewide Total Fire Ban today, tomorrow and Saturday, due to very hot and dry conditions across NSW. A Total Fire Ban means no fires out in the open, and is put in place in an effort to limit the potential of new fires developing. If you see an unattended fire please call Triple Zero immediately (000).
