Community hall in Pottsville gets a brand new floor

Upgrade has established the hall as a modern, functional space for years to come
It’s been a long time since its opening in 1985 but now the Pottsville Beach Community Hall has something new to brag about - a shiny new floor.
To ensure the Tweed grows in an environmentally, socially and economically responsible way, the project was recently completed by local contractors from Kingscliff and included removal of the existing floor and the supply, laying and treatment of a new stringybark hardwood floor.
The sustainably sourced timber was purchased through a local supplier and the old floor will be recycled and re-used, following through with Council’s ‘zero waste’ commitment.
Deputy Mayor of Tweed, Chris Cherry said the users of this community space were thrilled.
“The finished project has provided a safe and functional space for the very busy Pottsville Beach Community Hall providing longevity of this facility into the future,” Cr Cherry said.
“Community halls and facilities are such a vital part of the community and the new floor has provided a better space for community groups that currently use the hall, it will broaden the base of hall users, and preserve a sustainable, inclusive large indoor space for the community to enjoy,” she said.
The partnership between Tweed Shire Council and Pottsville Beach Community Hall Inc. to repair the wooden floor comes at a perfect time for this growing community and Member for Tweed, Geoff Provest joined the committee and Council for the official opening.
“The Pottsville Beach Community Hall has served the area well and is the focal point for a range of activities and events in this area. The new floor not only looks wonderful, but along with improvements to the building and the renovated kitchen, ensures the hall will remain at the heart of this community for years to come,” Mr Provest said.
Janet Tkachenko and the rest of the Pottsville Beach Community Hall Committee were absolutely delighted with the hall’s new wooden floor and thanked Tweed Shire Council for their work.
“The old dark wooden floorboards were collapsing and becoming a safety hazard. Although the floor replacement process unfortunately inconvenienced regular hall hirers, the results are amazing. The lighter floorboards brighten and lighten the hall making it feel expansive,” Ms Tkachenko said.
To pay for the refurbishment, Tweed Shire Council was successful in gaining $30,000 from the NSW Government's 2018-19 Crown Reserves Improvement Fund Program (CRIFP) to the Tweed Coast Reserve Land Manager towards 50 per cent of the cost of replacing the wooden floor.
As a requirement of the grant, $15,000 funding was contributed from Council’s Community Facilities Maintenance budget and $15,000 was contributed by Pottsville Beach Community Hall Inc.
