Council begins work on new four-year Community Development Strategy
Council is developing a new Community Development Strategy to help guide future support for the Tweed’s diverse communities.
As part of Council’s commitment to working towards safe, healthy and more inclusive communities, the four-year strategy will be informed by social research and consultation with key stakeholders and residents.
Council’s Community Development Team works alongside community groups, non-profits, service providers and other levels of government on programs that aim to strengthen the local community.
Coordinator for Community Development Chantelle Howse said that current community development programs range from events and activities to promote inclusion such as Youth Week, International Day of Disability, and Reconciliation Action Week through to supporting not-for-profit groups with financial grants and provision of community facilities.
“Council is actively involved in the local community and we participate in more than 40 community networks, forums and committees on an array of topics including homelessness, domestic violence, community halls and public art,” she said.
“The purpose of developing this strategy is to ensure the support we provide to the community reflects the social priorities of our residents. We encourage everyone to provide feedback – from individuals to community groups and other relevant service providers.”
Residents and community organisations can have their say at one of the following four focus groups by registering their attendance at www.yoursaytweed.com.au or by calling (02) 6670 2400:
- Murwillumbah | Canvas and Kettle Meeting Room, Civic and Cultural Centre | Monday 27 May, 3.30pm to 6.30pm
- Tweed Heads | Tweed Heads South Community Centre | Tuesday 28 May, 6.30pm to 9.30pm

- Cabarita | Cabarita Beach Sports Centre, Les Berger Fields | Wednesday 5 June, 6.30pm to 9.30pm
There will be a Community Forum on Wednesday 12 June to present the initial findings from the four focus groups back to interested parties as well as setting out next steps for the development of the strategy. The forum will be held at the Murwillumbah Auditorium at the Civic and Cultural Centre.
For those that are unable to attend a focus group session, you can read more and have your say at www.yoursaytweed.com.au or call Council on (02) 6670 2400. Hard copies of the survey can be collected from either Council’s Murwillumbah or Tweed Heads administration offices.
