‘Art Deco from the National Collection: The world turns modern’ comes to Tweed Regional Gallery
Later this month, the National Gallery of Australia will launch the travelling exhibition Art Deco from the National Collection: The world turns modern. The national tour will begin at the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre in Murwillumbah, a town with its own rich Art Deco heritage.
The exhibition reflects on the penetration of the Art Deco aesthetic in all facets of art, design and lifestyle during the period and includes a broad array of media such as painting, sculpture, prints and drawings, poster design and decorative art.
“It is a great pleasure to bring this exhibition to so many venues in Australia, in towns with their own impressive Art Deco credentials,” said Nick Mitzevich, Director of the National Gallery of Australia.
“The National Gallery has collected important Art Deco material for more than 40 years, and we now hold a significant collection, covering a wide range of media, both Australian and international. This exhibition contains a rich and considered selection and I am delighted that we have been able to include paintings, works on paper, sculpture and examples of fashion from the period.”
All are invited to attend the opening celebrations of Art Deco from the National Collection with guest speaker Nick Mitzevich, Director, National Gallery of Australia on Friday 31 May at 6pm.
To complement the NGA travelling exhibition, the Tweed Regional Gallery invited visual artists of the region to respond to the Art Deco architectural features of Murwillumbah. Their work is currently being displayed in Façade: Art Deco of Murwillumbah at our new satellite space Gallery DownTown, the annexe of Tweed Regional Gallery, situated in the vibrant M|Arts Precinct in Murwillumbah’s CBD.
