Help develop the Tweed’s Scenic Landscape Strategy
03 May 2019
The first of four Community Conversations is held on 9 May
A series of Community Conversation events begin next week to listen to community feedback on Council’s Draft Scenic Landscape Strategy.
The strategy aims to protect and enhance the highly valued scenic landscapes of the Tweed by producing guidelines that help with decision-making about future development.
The first Community Conversation event will be held at Tweed Regional Gallery in Murwillumbah on Thursday 9 May between 10am and 1pm. A further three events have been organised:
- Murwillumbah Civic Centre – Canvas and Kettle Room, Wednesday 15 May, 5.30-7.30pm
- Tyalgum Community Hall, Thursday 23 May, 11.30am-1.30pm
- Kingscliff Community Hall, Wednesday 5 June, 5.30-7.30pm
People can book by visiting
www.tweedshire.eventbrite.com.au or by calling (02) 6670 2503.
The strategy focuses on protecting and managing scenic landscapes seen from publicly accessible locations. It does not apply to views from private property.
Acting Unit Coordinator for Strategic Planning & Urban Design Robyn Eisermann said the final strategy will benefit the broader community by helping applicants of new development to understand, and avoid or minimise, the potential visual impacts on the landscape arising from their proposal.
“It’s important we hear the community’s likes and dislikes about the different landscape characteristics and settings so these values can be reflected in the strategy.
“The strategy is part of our commitment to balance environmental, social and economic considerations to develop the Tweed in a sustainable way and promote good design in the built environment. This includes ways for new development to complement and enhance the scenic landscape values of the community,” she said.
There’s more detailed information, an interactive mapping tool and the opportunity to take part in an online survey by visiting www.yoursaytweed.com.au/scenic-landscape-strategy.
Submissions can also be made by mail, online form or email. The last day to provide feedback is Wednesday 19 June 2019. The submissions and feedback received during the consultation period will be considered for incorporation into a revised draft and reported to Council.
The preparation for the strategy began in 2016 when Council undertook a mapping assessment of the prominent landscape character types and significant public viewing locations in the Tweed. These assessments were supported by feedback from a broad cross-section of people and community groups.
