A conversation about private land conservation

Conservation options for private landholders to be discussed at information session

Do you have native vegetation on your property you would like to conserve?

If so, you may like to attend an information session by the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) at the Autumn Club in Murwillumbah on Wednesday 10 April from 5.30pm to 7pm.

The BCT supports and works with private landholders to protect biodiversity in NSW through a number of programs.

Council’s Project Officer – Biodiversity, Michael Corke, said the evening would be of interest to landholders wishing to explore formal conservation options.

“The BCT administers two types of private land conservation agreements: Biodiversity Stewardship Agreements and Conservation Agreements,” Mr Corke said.

“Biodiversity Stewardship Agreements help landholders permanently protect and manage habitat areas. They enable landholders to generate biodiversity credits which can be sold to the BCT, a developer or other interested parties.

“Conservation Agreements also offer permanent habitat protection but do not generate biodiversity credits. They are generally available for large areas of high conservation value habitat.”

Tweed Shire Council administers the Land for Wildlife Program in the Tweed.

“This popular entry level conservation program offers significant support to landholders to help them manage wildlife habitat. However, many landholders may wish to explore higher forms of conservation and get a feel for the protections they provide and the benefits they accrue and this information session shouldn’t be missed,” he said.

This event is being delivered as part of the Filling the Biodiversity Gaps connecting Tweed Coast to Border Ranges Stage 3 project, which has been assisted by the NSW Government through its Environmental Trust. Council is also supporting the project.

Bookings are essential. Please register at www.trybooking.com/BBFMA or contact Amalia Pahlow at landcarecoordinator@tweedlandcare.org.au or on (02) 6670 2199. Tea/coffee and a light supper will be provided.
