Jewellers put their tools to USE

11 March 2019

Exhibition of contemporary jewellery and small objects opens at Tweed Regional Gallery

A new exhibition of contemporary jewellery and small objects will be officially opened at Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre on Friday 15 March.

The exhibition, titled USE, explores the impact of tools in artisan practice and was developed by the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Queensland.

The exhibition focuses on tools and processes used by jewellery practitioners and metalsmiths in orderto explore the concepts and layers of meaning within their work. While contemporary practices are highly diverse in their forms and motivations, ‘tools’ are the common denominator.

Curator Lisa Bryan-Brown says, “From traditional tools like hammers, saws and pliers, to modern innovations like 3D printers and laser-cutting machines, tools are essential in the creation of jewellery and small object works. That is why they provide such a rich and reflexive theme for a group exhibition of works by jewellery and small object artists.”

The selected artists are: Helen Bird, Jac Dyson, Lois Hayes, Catherine Hunter, Alicia Lane, Catherine Large, Samuel Lintern, Andy Lowrie, Nellie Peoples, Clare Poppi, Kierra-Jay Power, Paola Raggo, Elizabeth Shaw, Katie Stormonth, Rebecca Ward, Helen Wyatt, and Xiaohui Yang.

All are welcome to attend the official opening on Friday 15 March at 6pm (DST) with guest speaker Rebekah Butler, Executive Director, Museums & Galleries Queensland.

On Sunday 31 March from 2pm to 3pm (DST) Exhibition Curator Lisa Bryan-Brown will be giving a curator’s talk and will answer questions relating to the curatorial theme and the exhibition development.

USE is a touring exhibition in partnership between Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia (Queensland Chapter) Inc. and Museums & Galleries Queensland. This project is supported by the Visions regional touring program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to cultural material for all Australians; the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland; the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body; Liveworm Studio; and Queensland College of Art, Griffith University.
