Slow down as workers install road drainage

One lane of Tweed Valley Way, between the two exits to Tumbulgum village, will be closed this Saturday to allow Council to install some road drainage, weather permitting.

The lane closure may continue into Sunday if the works are not completed on Saturday.

Council will close the southbound lane for the entire one-kilometre length of the wire rope median between the two exits to Tumbulgum to install subsoil drains beneath where the road pavement continues to fail.

Both north and southbound traffic will travel via the northbound lane only under the direction of stop / slow flagmen.

‘Slow down roadworks ahead’ signage will be set up from 6.30am, before work starts at 8am.

Motorists are urged to obey the signage.

"This is the site of a major traffic accident late last year when a motorist failed to obey the signage and slow down, resulting in a very near miss for a Council traffic controller, three people being taken to hospital and three vehicles being destroyed by fire," Manager Roads and Stormwater Danny Rose said.

"We are now returning to site to get this drainage job done and have scheduled if for a weekend when there will be fewer vehicles on this major arterial road.

"We advise motorists to expect delays and be patient as we cannot repair the failing road pavement on the westbound lane until the drainage is in and working. We expect to be in a position to fix the pavement in the next two to three weeks."
