Council to light Salt-Casuarina cycleway

15 January 2019

3.5km of LED sensor lights to be installed

Council is installing 3.5 kilometres of streetlights along Casuarina cycleway with funds received from the State Government’s Department of Industries Stronger Countries Community Fund.

Grants from the fund target improvements to public facilities in regional areas.

Council contractor Coughran Electrical will start the six-month installation on 31 January 2019.

An information flyer about the $992,000 project was distributed to households in the Salt-Casuarina area last week.

Initially Council estimated the grant would pay for 2.5 kilometres of lights from Cathedral Court to Blue Horizon Drive, excluding the existing 742 metres of lighting between Oasis Way and Windsong Way, however due to efficiencies gained through the competitive tender process, the funds will pay for 3.5 kilometres of lights all the way south to Dryandras Court.

Lighting the final 968 metres from Dryandras Court to the Cudgen Nature Reserve will be undertaken if Council can successfully apply for funds under future government grant programs. This final section features an elevated boardwalk and may cost more to light.

The new LED lights will be fixed to light-grey coloured, marine-grade aluminium poles, whose design will allow easy installation of future CCTV cameras if and when required. The pole profile also allows easy fitting of items such as advertising banners.

The motion-sensor lights will illuminate when a pedestrian enters a sensor arc, which will extend eight metres either side of the pole. The sensor arcs of neighbouring poles will overlap, meaning three to four lights will illuminate in quick succession giving the pedestrian or cyclist about 120 metres sight distance ahead.

The lights, which will have 17-watt globes set on ‘moonlight’ luminosity, can be individually adjusted via remote control and dimmed by up to 80 per cent. The light will face the beach and a visor can be fitted to minimise light spill to nearby houses where required.

The project is designed to improve safety along the shared-user path and to allow cyclists and pedestrians to use the path at night time.

The shared-user path will remain open and essentially be unaffected during construction work.
