Garden leaks not eligible for bill relief

Council reminds property owners to check outdoor pipes and fittings

Council is reminding residents that they cannot get relief for a high water bill if they have a leak in garden water pipes and fittings.

The reminder has come after Council reported a spike in such claims, which are not eligible for a reduction of water consumption charges under Council’s Policy – Reduction of Water Related Charges due to Undetectable Leakage.

“Water leaks arising from the failure of pipes and fittings associated with garden watering systems are not eligible for a reduction of water consumption charges,” said Connections Engineer Elizabeth Seidl. “This applies whether the leak is underground or not.

“Council’s policy specifically excludes leaks from irrigation systems. Similarly, leaks associated with swimming pools and rainwater tanks are also ineligible under the policy.”

Property owners are responsible for ensuring that this pipework, fittings and fixtures are regularly maintained and replaced when required.

Ms Seidl advised property buyers to check irrigation systems, swimming pools and rainwater tank pipework and fittings before purchasing a property.

“In the case of rainwater tanks, the top-up system is a common point of failure so make sure that it is operating correctly and not filling the tank with town water unnecessarily. The tank could be overflowing without you knowing about it.”
