Artist draws upon details from nature

Carolyn Delzoppo’s ‘attached to the rest of the world’ opens at Tweed Regional Gallery
Scottish-American naturalist, environmental philosopher and pioneer glaciologist, John Muir has said ‘when one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world’. Mullumbimby-based artist Carolyn Delzoppo has taken this quote as a launch pad for her new body of work that highlights the interconnectivity of all things, both seen and unseen.
The exhibition, titled attached to the rest of the world, presents a series of observational pencil drawings of details from nature. “I am interested in the micro rather than the macro view of the world and believe that the ‘small picture’ is important,” Delzoppo said. “My drawing practice is about noticing, looking and seeing. The relationship between what the eye sees and what the hand translates is my considered and personal response to the world around me.”
Tweed Regional Gallery Director Susi Muddiman OAM says “Carolyn’s work invites us to examine the little things. Her exquisite observational drawings in pencil and pastel focus on details from nature, contemplating the idea that all things in nature are part of a complex and intimate relationship within the whole.”
The exhibition will include examples of the artist’s 'a-drawing-a-day' books. For the past five years, Delzoppo has produced a drawing every day in bound books of 365 pages each. She says she initially began this project as a discipline to further her drawing practice. These books are a treasure of reference material, a response to visual stimuli, and a place for the artist to be playful and free, further highlighting her interest in detail and connections.
attached to the rest of the world will be on display from Friday 7 December, with the Official Opening taking place on Friday 14 December at 6pm in conjunction with the opening of Marion Hall Best: Interiors. All are welcome to attend.
On Wednesday 6, Friday 8 and Sunday 10 February 2019, the artist will also be installing a ‘pop-up studio’ in the Gallery Foyer, where she will demonstrate her practice during Gallery hours.
