Tweed Regional Museum working towards dementia awareness

Supporting people with dementia to enjoy the museum experience

Tweed Regional Museum’s Director, Judy Kean and her staff have been recognised by Dementia Australia for their efforts to make the museum a more accessible place for people with dementia.

The Tweed Dementia Action Group recently presented Ms Kean with a certificate of recognition.

In the lead up to Dementia Awareness Month in September this year, Museum staff met with DAG members to share ideas on how to make the museum dementia friendly.

With these ideas in mind Ms Kean and her team developed their action plan and have started to make the changes, including better signage so people can easily find their way around.

“The most important change is to make sure our staff and volunteers understand about dementia and assist people to have a great experience of the museum,” Ms Kean said.

“For Dementia Awareness month museum volunteers participated in a dementia awareness workshop and became Dementia Friends.

“This campaign by Dementia Australia raises awareness about what we can all do to support and include people with dementia and their families in the community.

“By becoming Dementia Friends museum staff and volunteers will be able to support people with dementia enjoy the museum experience,” she said.
