Looking at art slowly promotes conversation

30 August 2018

September is Dementia Awareness Month

A new MemoryScape program to heighten public awareness about dementia will be launched at Tweed Regional Gallery in Murwillumbah on Friday 7 September, to coincide with Dementia Awareness Month.

Members of the community are invited to visit the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre on Friday 7 September from 10.30am – 12.30pm to learn more about the MemoryScape program, which encourages people living with dementia and their care partners to connect through a shared activity at Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre.

The Gallery’s Education and Audience Development Officer, Jodi Ferrari, invites you to join her for some enjoyable ‘slow art’ experiences that demonstrate how looking at and talking about art can have benefits for people living with dementia and their care partners. Discussion will also focus on how to use art and music to stimulate memories and conversation.

Mrs Ferrari said the Gallery launches a new MemoryScape program each year and that visitors can pick up this self-guided tour sheet which will highlight key artworks and questions to promote looking and discussion.

“Looking at artworks slowly together is such a wonderful activity and I look forward to sharing some of our stunning new collection show Three Decades: celebrating the Tweed Regional Gallery collection with the community,” she said.

A representative from Dementia Australia will be available on this day to provide information about dementia, risk reduction and support services available in the local area.

Dementia Awareness Month is held each year to increase awareness of dementia in the community. In 2018 Dementia Awareness Month is 1 - 30 September. For more information call the National Dementia Hotline on 1800 100 500.
