Helping residents to conserve Tweed Shire’s wonderful coastal biodiversity

Interested in conserving wildlife in your own backyard? Come along to the ‘Love Pets Love Wildlife’ event at Kingscliff this Sunday (29 July) to find out how you can get involved in two Council projects which are seeking your input.

The ‘Investing in the Future of Pottsville Koalas’ project aims to foster the protection and recovery of the koala population at the Pottsville Wetland. The three-year project is in its second year and is made possible by the NSW Government via its Environmental Trust with additional financial support from Council.

Council’s Threatened Species Officer, Tanya Fountain said Pottsville Wetland is a unique environmental asset at the back door of Pottsville.

“At more than 550 hectares, the Pottsville Wetland, Pottsville Environment Park and Koala Beach bushland estate form a coastal koala reserve at Pottsville,” Ms Fountain said.

“Together with Cudgen Nature Reserve, this bushland is essential for the future survival of the Tweed Coast koala population.

“Coastal residents are privileged to live among such biodiversity and we would love to get neighbours of our important coastal reserves, including the Pottsville Wetland, to help protect our bushland and koalas by being great bushland neighbours,” she said.

You will be able to sign up for Council’s Backyard Habitat for Wildlife program at the event, which offers urban landholders a great opportunity to conserve our unique environment in your own backyard.

“The program offers arrange of information and tips on how to manage backyard habitat, a great sign for your letterbox or gate and opportunities to network with like-minded people and receive a newsletter,” Ms Fountain said.

For residents wanting to register for the Backyard Habitat for Wildlife program, there will be a native plant giveaway. There will also be resources on hand to help you manage your backyard biodiversity, such as the popular My Native Garden book, a practical planting guide to promote biodiversity in Tweed Shire.

“This event is all about celebrating the animals in our lives, including our amazing koalas. There will be live music, pet trade stalls, free advice and training sessions for pet owners but also shows and information for those who love our native wildlife. Not to mention kids’ activities, plenty of prizes up for grabs and Kooee Koala will be there,” Ms Fountain said.

Learn more about both programs by having a chat with staff at the Natural Resource Management stall at free event on Sunday at Rowan Robinson Park, Kingscliff from 10am to 1pm.

The Love Pets Love Wildlife event will be held in Kingscliff Community Hall in case of heavy rain.
