Deputy Prime Minister announces $1 million + from Building Better Regions Fund
Projects in Tweed Heads and Murwillumbah are set to benefit from a Federal injection of more than $1 million in funds through the Building Better Regions Fund.
Deputy Prime Minister and Nationals’ Leader Michael McCormack visited Tweed Heads on Wednesday to announce the funds for the Tweed Heads Civic and Cultural Centre Plaza and Social Enterprise Café and projects in Knox Park in Murwillumbah.
Deputy Mayor of Tweed, Councillor Reece Byrnes, welcomed the funds.
“We thank the Deputy Prime Minister and the Australian Government for these funds, which will boost amenity, opportunity and access across our Shire,” Cr Byrnes said.
“They’re terrific projects which will help create local jobs during construction and improve community facilities.”
The Tweed Heads Civic and Cultural Centre Plaza and Social Enterprise Café will receive $564,000 towards the completion of the Tweed Civic and Cultural precinct.
The Tweed Heads Cultural and Administration Precinct was master planned in 2015 and Council has progressively invested in phases of the upgrade. This project is the final stage for the site development. This final stage is budgeted at $1.28 million and Council will be co-contributing on a dollar-for-dollar basis.
The upgrade will include:
- Construction of an outdoor plaza for cultural activities
- A social enterprise café to stimulate the local economy and address social issues
- Upgrading the entrance to the main buildings to provide universal access
- Upgrading technical resources and lighting for the auditorium to save energy and attract and increase contemporary activities.
Work on the Tweed Civic and Cultural Centre Plaza and Café will commence in 2018 for completion in 2019.
Meanwhile, the Murwillumbah Town Centre Revitalisation Project has been allocated $500,000 towards the building of a new entry plaza, refurbished bus shelter, amenities block and upgraded associated infrastructure in and around Knox Park.
Council will also provide additional funds to enable the completion of the Knox Park Stage Two project increasing Knox Park’s appeal for residents of all ages, and prepare the park for the anticipated increase in visitor numbers.
