Ophir Glen and Reserve Creek roads closed for repair
12 July 2018
Two-day closures next week for bridge works after flood
Council contractors will close two shire roads next week to undertake repairs following the March 2017 flood.
Ophir Glen Road, near the intersection of Snake Gully Road at Upper Burringbar, will be closed from 7am on Tuesday 17 July to 5pm on Wednesday 18 July so contractors can repair a bridge. Residents above the closure should prepare to be isolated for two days.
The contractor will assist in rubbish bin collection on Wednesday. If residents drop their bins off at the worksite the contractor will take them to the other side of the closure for collection and return them after they have been emptied. The contractor also will ensure emergency vehicle access in the event of an emergency.
On Thursday 19 July from 7am to Friday 20 July at 5pm, Reserve Creek Road will be closed near the Quinns Road intersection at Cudgera Creek for bridge repairs.
Residents are advised to use an alternate route during this closure.
In both closures, the contractor will try to get the roads reopened in less than the advertised two days.
Council is on track to complete all road and bridge flood repairs by the end of the year.
There are some 80 outstanding repair jobs from the 1529 created by the March 2017 flood. About 20 of these jobs are minor guardrail repairs, which will be completed in August. The rest are medium to major repairs that require both geotechnical investigation and design work.
Of the major repair jobs that have caused the most inconvenience to motorists since the flood:
· Tweed Valley Way at South Murwillumbah has been completed
· Clothiers Creek Road remains closed to heavy vehicles with one-lane open to cars and light vehicles. Work to repair this landslip was temporarily put on hold for a redesign to be completed after the toe was excavated. Works recommenced with minimal delays and the contractor is expected to complete the works in August
· Cudgera Creek Road is open to local traffic only, as while the major landslip that caused the road to be closed since the flood has been repaired the contractor is now working on several other slip repairs that require full road closures for machine access
· Mount Warning Road remains one-lane only with work ongoing to repair a slip near Mavis’s Kitchen. A second landslip near the National Park will require intermittent full road closures for repairs to be done, probably in October, and
· Hogans Road at Dulguigan remains one-lane with repairs to the major landslip expected to start this month. The contractor may require a full road closure to complete the repairs but will try to keep one-lane open if possible.
Other upcoming landslip repairs that will impact road users include:
· Church Street in Murwillumbah will be closed during working hours for a period in August as work continues to repair this slip, and
· Two locations along Urliup Road at Urliup will need to be closed to repair slips about two kilometres north of the intersection with Blackbutt Road.
