Playgroups, classes for the homeless, support for young people and marine debris clean-up are among the worthy community initiatives to receive a share of more than $40,000 in funding through Council’s Community Sponsorship Policy for 2018.
Mayor of Tweed Shire, Councillor Katie Milne, congratulated representatives of a range of not-for-profit organisations at an afternoon tea to celebrate their projects.
“It’s one of the greatest pleasures working at Council to support community groups and I thank you all for the endless hours you put in as volunteers,” Cr Milne said.
“The beautiful spirit of volunteers makes a huge difference to people’s lives and environment.
“There are so many diverse organisations in the Tweed working towards making our shire a better, more equitable place.
“Whether you are working to protect the environment, helping improve the lives of the disadvantaged or catering for a special interest or hobby, volunteers are enhancing and enriching our community every day.”
The aim of the Community Sponsorship Policy is to provide financial assistance by way of a sponsorship agreement to local community groups and organisations. These funds are for activities and projects that benefit the health and wellbeing of Tweed Shire residents.
