Gong recognises best-practice in Australia

Council Manager Roads and Stormwater Danny Rose has been named a finalist in the Flood Risk Manager of the Year 2018.

Mr Rose was nominated for the award for his past 10 year’s work in preparing both Council and the Tweed community for the challenges of flood events across the five geographically different catchments of the shire.

“Danny’s work in leading the development of flood studies and floodplain risk management plans stood both Council and the community in good stead ahead of the March 2017 flood and our recovery effort afterward,” General Manager Troy Green said.

“Through Danny’s work with various government agencies and organisations, his leadership in flood recovery, flood mitigation and community resilience projects and his implementation of sensible floodplain development in a high-growth area, Council was in a position immediately after the flood to receive seven new flood grants for improved flood gauging, additional studies and voluntary house purchase and raising schemes.”

Danny will now lead that work, which will build further understanding of flood behaviours and greater community resilience.

“Council is very proud of Danny’s work as he has put us in the enviable position of being chosen to pilot numerous innovative floodplain management projects, including a State-first industrial land swap deal, trials of new flood mitigation asset guidelines, ongoing negotiations around natural disaster funding, new case studies for flood insurance, studies into community response and awareness in flood-impacted suburbs and caravan parks and exploration of challenging town planning concepts involving shelter-in-place alternatives to evacuation.”

Danny also serves the community as the Technical Director of Floodplain Management Australia and passes his expertise on to the next generation of flood professionals by teaching short courses at the University of Technology in Sydney.

In accepting his place as a finalist, Danny points out that the individual recognition would not be possible without the team effort of Roads and Stormwater and the support of Council as a whole for the work it does.

The winner of the 2018 Floodplain Manager of the Year will be announced at the Floodplain Management Australia annual conference to be held on the Gold Coast next week (31 May).
