Artist Highlights Battle Between Progress and Conservation

Exhibition ‘Subdivision’ by Byron artist Georgie Maddox opens at Tweed Regional Gallery

Subdivision is the latest solo exhibition by Northern Rivers artist Georgie Maddox, on display at Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre from Friday 25 May until Sunday 15 July.

Gallery Director, Ms Susi Muddiman OAM said the exhibition is presented as an outcome of the Gallery’s Community Access Exhibitions Program (CAEP), which caters specifically to artists who are residents of Tweed, Kyogle, Lismore, Ballina, Byron, Scenic Rim or Gold Coast City Shires.

“This popular program offers regional artist the opportunity to present their work within a world class facility,” Ms Muddiman said.

“We are proud to host the work of Georgie Maddox, whose artistic practice offers a reminder of the importance of our unique landscape.

“Her work explores the effects of consumer culture on sustainability, as well as the broader environmental impacts on our natural landscape.”

Ms Maddox said each artwork, created in oil on canvas, depicts abstract landscapes within Northern NSW including the controversial West Byron development.

“There is a constant battle between progress verses conservation of the natural land,” she said.

These key issues are visually communicated through deconstruction - cutting, ripping, tearing - then reconstruction - compiling, realigning, restitching thus creating a new aesthetic and perspective of the original landscape artwork.

The resulting artworks remind the viewer that once something has been destroyed it can never be fully restored as our natural environment is irreplaceable, precious and unique just as our interaction with the land permanently alters and changes it for future generations.

This exhibition officially opens at Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre on Friday 25 May 2018 at 6.00pm, in conjunction with the opening of Andrew Antoniou: Curtain Call, and the After Hours Preview of the Border Art Prize 2018.
