Council supporting local music scene with 25 acts in 10 venues

Those attending the first big day of the Murwillumbah Art Trail (MAT18) event will enjoy the musical accompaniment of more than two dozen local acts to go along with the great works of art on display.

Council will sponsor a day of music in 10 art trail venues on Saturday 19 May as part of the Musicians Connecting Communities or MC2 initiative.

Council Community Development Officer Cultural Planning David Burgener said the goal of the program is to offer a chance for musicians to play in the shire and connect with local venues.

“One of our intentions is to establish relationships between Council, musicians and venue owners,” Mr Burgener said.

“The idea is to help support live music in the shire by providing a family-friendly event the whole community can enjoy.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with MAT18.because it helps ensure the musicians are introduced to a wider audience,” Mr Burgener said.

“The music will also enhance art trail and help create a great atmosphere.”

The event follows on from the first MC2 mini festival in Kingscliff on April 28 which was well received despite unfortunately poor weather on the day.

“What the experience in Kingscliff highlighted was the amazing amount of talent we have in Tweed Shire,” Mr Burgener said.

“We saw a very diverse range of performers on the day so there’s no doubt there will be someone on the bill to appeal to everyone’s taste.”

Another focus of the festivals will be an attempt to support the establishment of mentoring situations, especially for emerging artists just starting out on their musical careers.

“The name, Musicians Connecting Communities (MC2) really captures what the program is all about,” said Mr Burgener.

“We know the talent is out there and if Council can do something to help bring it along it is a worthwhile investment on many levels.

“Music plays an important role in supporting a vibrant community, not only for the artists involved or the local economy, but also when it comes to making connections between individuals and organisations.”

Visit Council’s Facebook page for more information including a full lineup of acts performing in Murwillumbah.

The events are the result of a successful grant application made by Council to the Live Music Office’s Live and Local Initiative, funded by CREATE NSW.
