Exploring ‘A Painter’s House’

Gallery Up Late event to showcase exhibition based on Margaret Olley’s home studio

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from four of Australia’s leading contemporary painters. Come along to the Gallery to hear these artists discuss their interpretation of one of the country’s great artists.

John Honeywill, Guy Maestri, Lewis Miller and Monica Rohan have all responded to Margaret Olley’s home studio for the exhibition A painter’s house. The artists created works inspired by the re-creation at the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre and objects they chose from her home.

A painter’s house, which runs until 7 October, features their work alongside paintings by Olley from the collections of Tweed Regional Gallery, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Maitland Regional Gallery, the University of Queensland Art Museum and private collections.

The artists, along with museologist Sally Watterson who oversaw the studio re-creation which involved the transfer of more than 21,000 meticulously arranged objects, will speak in a panel discussion at a special Gallery Up Late event on Friday 11 May starting at 6.30pm.

The panel will share insights into the re-creation and its reinvigoration as subject matter for painting.

Margaret Olley Art Centre Curator Ingrid Hedgcock, who will host the event, said the exhibition views these objects from a fresh perspective.

“For Olley, her home was first and foremost a studio — a painter’s house,” Ms Hedgcock said.

“While she worked, her studio changed like a vibrant living ecosystem of art and life entwined; in her words, it was ‘a subject of endless possibilities’.”

Entry to the Gallery Up Late event will include after-hours access (5-8pm) to the Gallery and to the Café, which will offer a full menu for dining prior to the discussion.

Places are limited and bookings are essential through www.trybooking.com/UCDO. Entry is $15 or $10 for students or Gallery Friends and Foundation members.
