Tilapia Buster at Cabarita aims to reduce numbers of tasty pest species

Everyone with a fishing rod is invited to participate in a family friendly and fun tournament aimed at reducing the population of an invasive fish which also happens to taste great.

The Cudgen Tilapia Buster will be held in Cabarita on Saturday 12 May in partnership with Conservation Volunteers Australia and the NSW Department of Primary Industries.

The tilapia is an exotic fish species from Africa which have been described as the cane toads of Australian waterways as they out compete native fish for habitat and food.

Despite this reputation they are a popular eating fish worldwide, known for their mild taste.

Council Waterways Program Leader Tom Alletson said the fish have been caught in high numbers in the Bogangar canal system and Cudgen Lake.

“Eradication of tilapia from a natural waterway is considered to be impossible so it is now extremely important for tilapia to be kept out of the Tweed River and all other waterways in NSW,” Mr Alletson said.

“The Tilapia Buster event is intended to put a dent in the local population and promote awareness about the species and how their spread can be controlled.”

The free event will be located at 38 Cabarita Road, Bogangar and will include fishing for tilapia from the riverbank (BYO fishing gear), tilapia weigh-ins and prizes.

To be eligible for prizes you need to register and show your current fishing license at the Conservation Volunteers marquee between 9am-3pm.

After registration you will receive a free brag-mat, wristband and pest fish ID card and prizes will be drawn. There will be expert presentations between 11am-12pm and educational resources for all.

Prize draws at the close of competition at 3pm will include adults and junior sections for heaviest tilapia and most tilapia caught.

For further information about the event and to register for the Tilapia Buster please phone Shae Kolk on 02 6681 6169.
