A special message about the importance of keeping pets contained will add a splash of colour to the Fingal Head community in coming weeks.

The colour comes from a series of posters designed by students of Fingal Head Public School as part of Tweed Shire Council’s ‘Working Together to Protect Threatened Fauna on Fingal Peninsula’ funded by the NSW Environmental Trust.

The art works have been digitally scanned and applied to large aluminium panels which will be mounted on buildings in picnic areas and in Fingal’s Tweed Coast Holiday Park.

The Mayor of Tweed Councillor Katie Milne said the project is a fun, inspiring and artistic way to educate students, locals and visitors about this precious local environment.

“Fingal is home to many threatened birds and animals that are at risk of extinction and the students have created simple and very powerful images to help save them through art,” Cr Milne said.

“It is great to see young students getting involved in a project like this and so clearly conveying these important environmental messages.”

After learning about Fingal’s local native animals, the threats they face for survival and how they can help them, the students created colourful paintings and messages to share with the community.

Principal Christine Marshall said the goal is to get people talking.

“Hopefully the paintings will create conversations in the community around the theme of protecting native fauna and how simple actions can save many of these creatures from the brink of extinction,” Ms Marshall said.

“The students’ messages show that they have learnt much about the many threats facing our wildlife.

"Positive messages about what to do about unleashed domestic dogs, free roaming pet cats, litter and discarded fishing line on the beach accompany many of the paintings.”

The Mayor will join with staff and students from Fingal Head Public School at the Old Boat Harbour Park on Fingal Road on Tuesday 10 April to officially launch the project.
