Community catch-up to acknowledge ongoing recovery

Gathering in Knox Park for free barbecue one year on from floods

Council will acknowledge the ongoing recovery from the floods associated with Cyclone Debbie with a community catch-up and free barbecue in Knox Park.

The event will be held from 3pm to 6pm on Thursday 29 March, one year on from the flood, and will include members of community organisations who provided and continue to provide assistance.

Tweed Shire Council Mayor Councillor Katie Milne said the gathering will be a low key event.

“We all have our own memories of what happened one year ago and for many members of our community the recovery is still ongoing,” Cr Milne said

“The purpose of this event is to recognise and acknowledge that ongoing recovery, to provide an avenue to share and/or listen to peoples’ stories in a relaxed environment, and support each other to continue to heal together.

“We are asking people to bring a blanket, and to bring the beautiful community spirit that we saw rise up in a ‘flood of love’ for those affected.”

Representatives from Council and the State Emergency Service will speak at the gathering and there will be some activities planned with children in mind facilitated by Thrive 2484 and other volunteers.

Council staff will also be on hand to hand out chocolate Easter eggs while the SES will be coordinating the free barbecue.
