Wire rope median for Tweed Valley Way between village’s north and south exits

Council will start the first of this financial year’s Blackspot Programme projects in two weeks’ time to install a wire rope median on Tweed Valley Way between the two exits to the village of Tumbulgum.

The section has a history of serious and fatal crashes and the work is being funded under the Federal Government’s 2017-2018 Blackspot Programme at a cost of $1.3 million.

On Monday February 19, Council will divert all traffic on to the western side of the road to allow them to work safely on the eastern side of the road to widen the southbound shoulder.

Once the shoulder is widened, they will then reseal the entire section between the Riverside Drive North and South exits, including the intersection of the North exit and Tweed Valley Way. During the two-day resealing task, motorists should expect long delays.

New line-markings will move the stop line on Riverside Drive North exit further out on to Tweed Valley Way to improve visibility for motorists turning right out of Riverside Drive on to the 100kmh major arterial road. Currently, if a vehicle is travelling in the left-hand slip lane on Tweed Valley Way it can block from view any through-traffic on Tweed Valley Way.

After the section is resealed and line-marked, both northbound and southbound traffic will be directed to travel on the respective shoulders to provide a safe workzone for workers installing the centre wire rope median.

During works, a 40kmh speed limit will apply under the direction of stop / slow flagmen.

Work will be undertaken from 7am to 4pm Monday to Friday.

The project is expected to take 12 weeks to complete and will deliver physical separation of northbound and southbound traffic, two-metre-wide road shoulders, 3.5-metre-wide traffic lanes and a two-metre wide centre median.
