Mayor of Tweed, Councillor Katie Milne, has welcomed today’s announcement of the results of the national same sex marriage survey.
“Congratulations to everyone who voted in this survey. This is a great result for our electorate. Our ‘yes’ vote is one of the one of the highest around the nation, particularly in the regional areas,” Councillor Milne said.
“This is a win for love, compassion, diversity, and human rights for all. Such a positive result shows that our LGBTQIA+ community are truly supported. I am so pleased.”
“Our Council took a strong stand to support our community and encourage a ‘yes’ vote. We flew the rainbow colours outside our two civic centres, and raised over $1,200 from a screening of ‘The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert’ for the youth mental health service, Headspace, to highlight the cause.
“I thank my fellow Councillors – Deputy Mayor, Reece Byrnes, Chris Cherry and Ron Cooper - for their courage in standing up for what is right and just for our LGBTQIA+ residents and in line with the thinking of the majority of the people in or community, as today’s strong mandate shows,” she said.
In the Richmond electorate, a strong 67.9 per cent (62,591) voted yes and 32.1 per cent no (29,625) with 80.3 per cent of eligible voters returning their forms (92,490). This was the eighth highest ‘yes’ votes among electorates in NSW and among the strongest outside metropolitan areas.
