Police continue investigations into the cause of the blaze

Police investigations are continuing into a fire at Tennis Terranora, Joan Nicholl Tennis Centre in the early hours of this morning.

Tennis Terranora activities are temporarily suspended while the investigation is underway, but club hopes to be up and running as soon as possible.

Council’s Unit Coordinator Recreation Services Matt McCann said disappointed club members gathered at the site early this morning.

“In my brief discussion with the club their disappointment was apparent, however we have a resilient community and no one was injured,” Mr McCann said.

“We don’t yet know the cause of the fire but if anyone has any information about suspicious activity or anything else relating to this fire, we ask them to contact Tweed Heads Police as soon as possible.”

The council-owned toilet facility - which is shared between the club and the neighbouring parkland - was spared by the fire.

Due to the public safety risk surrounding the present state of the building, Council has arranged temporary fencing to be installed preventing access into and adjacent to the damaged building.

Fortunately, the playing courts seem to be undamaged so Council will arrange the supply of two portable toilets to assist the club and members to return to playing as soon as possible.

Arrangements are being taken to disconnect live power at the site making it safe for public use.
