Cat survey seeks broad input from Tweed residents
A community education program about cats is going back to the community with a follow-up survey open to all Tweed residents over the age of 18.
The Love Cats Love Wildlife questionnaire is the second survey for the program, to help shape future animal welfare education programs for the local community.
“The first survey provided a lot of valuable information and this questionnaire builds further on what we heard,” Council’s Pest Management Program Leader, Pam Gray, said.
“This follow-up survey looks further at cat ownership and management and is open to all Tweed adults, whether you own a cat or not.”
To complete the survey online, go to www.tweed.nsw.gov.au and see Hot Topics. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and all information provided is confidential.
Printed copies are available at Council offices, libraries and some veterinary surgeries.
Completed surveys must be received by Monday 13 November.
Residents who complete the survey and provide their name and contact details will go in a draw for a $25 gift voucher.
Participants can also register to find out more about the secret life of your cat, through a Tweed 'citizen science' cat tracker project scheduled to start early next year.
There are more than 24 million pets in Australia today – slightly eclipsing the nation’s human population at 23.8 million. Cats are the second most common type of pet, with an estimated 3.9 million in Australia.
Australia continues to have one of the highest household rates of pet ownership in the world, with 62 per cent of households owning cats. Thirty-eight per cent have dogs and 29 per cent have cats, at an average of 1.3 dogs and 1.4 cats per household.
