26 September 2017
An extraordinary meeting of Council will be held tomorrow (Wednesday 27 September) at 5.30pm at the Murwillumbah Council Chambers.
The meeting will consider a rescission motion on a resolution from last Thursday’s Council meeting which supported a ‘yes’ vote to amend the Marriage Act.
The resolution to be considered for rescission is:
That:
1. Confirms support to amend the Marriage Act to include all members of the LGBTQIA community.
2. Erects a rainbow flag or banner outside the Tweed and Murwillumbah Council chambers for the duration of the Postal Survey.
3. Promotes Council's position of support through forums such as media and social media and holds at least one Councillor led public function to promote the 'Yes' vote.
The rescission motion was signed by Councillors Pryce Allsop, James Owen and Warren Polglase. At Thursday’s meeting, the three councillors had voted against a Notice of Motion put forward by Mayor of Tweed, Councillor Katie Milne.
Councillors voting to amend the Marriage Act and support the ‘yes’ vote Notice of Motion were Councillors Katie Milne, Reece Byrnes, Chris Cherry and Ron Cooper.
A Community Access session will be held before tomorrow’s meeting at 4.30pm, with the opportunity for two speakers from the community to speak for the rescission motion and two against.
Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting.
