Take in the new exhibitions while kids enjoy holidays workshops

New exhibitions and a series of school holidays activities will keep the whole family entertained at the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre.

Duxford Street Interiors has just opened in the Margaret Olley Art Centre (MOAC). The Les Peterkin Portrait Prize for Children will be on display at the Gallery from Wednesday 20 September, while Brett Whiteley: other places (somewhere else) and Caldera Art 2017 open on Friday 29 September.

While you enjoy the new exhibitions and Gallery Café, book the kids in for a workshop. Classes are small and their tutors are passionate about sharing skills and a love of learning about art.

Additional activities include the beautiful MOAC Kid’s Guide acitvity book and the opportunity to create iPad artworks while listening to a symphony through the earphones.

Two inspiring workshops will be conducted by Carleen Joy on Thursday 28 September. Children aged 5-8 years will love Treading Lightly, at 10am to 11.30am. After a garden walk in the Gallery grounds, participants will trace around their feet and draw the things they did or might have walked across, thinking about the plants and creatures that share the planet. Cost $18.

Children aged 7 to 13 years will work collaboratively to paint a large Field of Flowers, using oil pastels and paint. Communication, coordination, listening and looking will be essential. Kids will need to think about how the marks they are making will add to what is already drawn, to form the field of flowers. When the artwork is completed, each child will use a cardboard frame to select one or more sections to cut out, mount and keep. Time: 12.30pm - 3pm. Cost $27.

Monochrome Portraits on Friday 6 October is for high school-aged kids - beginners to experienced. Choose an image (or bring your own) to paint a convincing portrait of a person or animal. Tutor Sharon Muir loves sharing her knowledge of colour and tone and will teach the basics of painting tonally using the beautiful medium of gouache (opaque watercolour) on paper. Time: 10am to 3pm. Cost $50 per student.

Book two children or two classes for any of these workshops and receive a $3 discount per booking.

A fantastic ‘Robotics 101’ LEGO® Workshop with BRICKS 4 KIDZ® will run on Thursday 5 October, for kids aged 7 and over. Details and bookings availble at www.bricks4kidz.com.au/currumbin.

Workshop participants should wear art suitable clothing and shoes and bring a drink bottle and lunch or a snack as appropriate. Bookings are essential for all classes by emailing tweedart@tweed.nsw.gov.au or phone (02) 6670 2790.
