School holiday workshops at Tweed Regional Gallery
Learn to create a compelling portrait or bring LEGO® to life during school holiday workshops at Tweed Regional Gallery in Murwillumbah.
On Friday 7 July, high school-aged kids can create a ‘Magnificent Monochrome Portrait’ under the guidance of artist Sharon Muir. Students will learn the basics of painting tonally and leave the class with a convincing painted likeness of a face. Students can bring A4 or A3-sized black and white photocopies of a clearly viewable face of themselves or a chosen subject. Alternatively, a face can be chosen from the tutor’s folio. 10am - 2.30pm, cost $47. Students should bring lunch and a drink, and a fine mist spray bottle (if you have one). For bookings, phone the Gallery on (02) 6670 2790, pop in or visit http://artgallery.tweed.nsw.gov.au/NewsEventsEducation
Kids will use fascinating and challenging LEGO® components to create dynamic vehicles, inventions and machines at the Remote Control Mania LEGO® Workshop on Thursday 13 July. Making them move is the name of the game and participants will set their creations in motion using LEGO® wireless remote controls, during the BRICKS 4 KIDZ® event. Suitable for ages 6 years and up and all kids take home a B4K cap, tee or other item. 9am - 3.30pm, cost $79. For bookings, go to www.bricks4kidz.com.au/currumbin and see ‘School Holiday Programs’.
To complement the current Portraits: Margaret Olley exhibition at Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre, tutor Carleen Joy’s workshops on Friday 14 July look at techniques to build your own portrait or self-portrait. Children aged 5-8 years can ‘Print It’ from 10am to noon. Draw and print a portrait of someone special – from memory or bring a photograph. Start with a line drawing, make a printed portrait, then add features using coloured oil pastels. Cost $23, or $20 if booking more than one child or class. Kids aged 7 to 13 years can ‘Mix It Up’ from 1pm - 3.30pm, focusing on line, texture and colour to create a self-portrait in a favourite landscape. This might be the beach, bushland, your bedroom or wherever your imagination takes you. Start with printmaking, then explore adding charcoal, ink and oil pastels to build idea in layers. Cost $27, or $23 if booking more than one child or class. To book, please phone the Gallery on (02) 6670 2790, pop in or visit the website for more information. Kids should bring morning or afternoon tea and a drink.
Young visitors to the Gallery can also pick up a free drawing activity for families in the Foyer, explore with a copy of the Margaret Olley Art Centre Kid’s Guide or listen to a symphony on headphones while creating a digital artwork on the iPads.
Tweed Regional Gallery is located at 2 Mistral Road, South Murwillumbah and is open Wednesdays to Sundays from 10am - 5pm. Admission to the Gallery is free.
