Yeldham surrenders creativity to powerful connections

Gallery features one of Australia’s most original visual artists

Landscape and figurative works by one of Australia’s most original and creative contemporary visual artists, Joshua Yeldham, will be on exhibition at Tweed Regional Gallery from 26 May - 19 November 2017.

The stunning exhibition, Surrender, provides a glimpse into Yeldham’s creative inspiration and spiritual journey through the Australian landscape, particularly the Pittwater and Hawkesbury River regions he has known since childhood.

Drawing from a reverential love of nature and deep spiritual affiliation with the land, Yeldham creates intricately rendered works that move between narrative and myth, imagination and real experience.

This fascinating artist has developed a unique aesthetic that often merges various mediums, working across painting, photography, drawing and sculpture. Surrender includes his characteristic oil paintings with sculptural assemblages on board, and his pierced and carved photographs.

Visitors to the exhibition can also view Yeldham’s film Surrender, as well as an episode of the ABC program One Plus One which focuses on Yeldham and provides an insightful interview with the artist.

From Friday 4 August, Tweed Regional Gallery will feature a second exhibition of works by Yeldham, comprising pieces created during a recent residency at the Gallery. Yeldham was invited to participate in the Gallery’s Nancy Fairfax Artist in Residence program.

Gallery Director Susi Muddiman said: “The art of Joshua Yeldham is sensitive and strong. His work expresses his powerful connection to the Australian landscape and relationships with his family.

“I urge visitors to learn more about Josh through this exhibition and his wonderful publication Surrender – a journal for my daughter.”

Everyone is welcome to join the artist for an Exhibition Floortalk on Surrender, on Friday 4 August at 4pm, presented in conjunction with the Byron Writers Festival. This will be followed by an opening preview of Yeldham’s second exhibition, of work created during his time in the Gallery’s Nancy Fairfax Artist in Residence Studio. From 5pm, join Gallery Director Susi Muddiman OAM for refreshments in the Gallery’s Foyer as a celebration of both exhibitions.

Surrender: a journal for my daughter is available for sale in the Gallery Shop.

Joshua Yeldham is represented by Arthouse Gallery, Sydney and Scott Livesey Galleries, Melbourne.
