Generous donations to Mayoral Appeal over $200,000 but more still needed
Was your home or business affected by the recent flood in the Tweed? You may be eligible for financial or other support from the Tweed Mayoral Flood Appeal. Applications are now open.
With the support of a host of community events and the generosity of a range of businesses, community organisations and individuals, the Tweed Mayoral Flood Appeal is now over the $200,000 mark ($205,905 at 8am today).
All applications will be assessed by an independent committee chaired by Brian Wilkinson (Independent Member of Council’s Audit Committee) and three other independent representatives of the community/human services, business and food producers sectors. Council’s Internal Auditor and Director Corporate Services will provide governance and administrative support to the committee. The Mayor of Tweed will participate only as an observer of the process.
Priority will be given to those people and businesses who have limited access to other forms of assistance such as grants, insurance or disaster relief funding. Those who have received or will receive some assistance are still encouraged to apply.
Information on eligibility for financial support and how to apply is available via www.tweed.nsw.gov.au/MayorAppealFund and Council’s Facebook page. The form is easy to fill out online or can be downloaded as a hard copy form to be mailed, emailed or hand delivered to Council offices at Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads or the Flood Recovery Centre.
Funds will be distributed through at least two rounds with the first round opening today and closing at 4.30pm on Friday 19 May. Applications for Round 2 of funding will open Monday 19 June and close at 4.30pm on Friday 7 July.
“We are so grateful for the wonderful generosity of all those who have assisted or made donations to the cause so far. Your help - whether large or small - makes an enormous difference to our community who are still suffering so much and have a very long road ahead to rebuild their lives,” Mayor of Tweed, Councillor Katie Milne said.
“With the assistance of the wider community we are hopeful we can raise more funds in the weeks ahead to help those who have such heartbreaking loss, especially those without other forms of assistance. If everyone who could gave even just $10 or $20 we could raise so much more.
“Council is mindful of the enormous affect the floods have had on the community and the significant red tape and administrative burden that many local residents already face in accessing support.
“So the focus of the application process for the Mayoral Appeal Fund will be an easy-to-complete application form and submission process.
“One hundred percent of funds will be distributed - there are no administration fees associated with the appeal and all donations are tax deductible,” she said.
