Council waives tip fees ahead of tip reopening

03 April 2017

Tip road still under water and closed to cars

The road into Council’s Resource Recovery Centre at Stotts Creek is still under water and is only accessible to trucks.

“We hope the water will recede enough to allow cars to get in by this afternoon or tomorrow,” said Director Community and Natural Resources Tracey Stinson.

“We’ve waived tipping fees to help the community clean up.”

Council has put skips on the ground in the hardest hit areas and invites residents to fill them up.

“These skips are for residents only but please do not put hazardous waste in them as they can pose a safety risk to our staff in handling the waste,” said Ms Stinson.

“Paints, oils and batteries etc should be set aside, tidily, away from domestic waste and debris.

“If you have asbestos, this needs to be handled very carefully.”

A licenced asbestos removalist should be contacted for large demolition or removal works of more than 10 square metres, which would equate to an average-sized bathroom.

However if you have small quantities of asbestos or are unsure of whether the material is hazardous, please:

  • Stack any materials you are concerned about in neat piles away from other household waste

  • Cover if possible (it needs to be wrapped in black builder’s plastic, available from hardware stores)

  • Do not break up the material as that will release the toxic fibres. Keep it as big as possible and keep it damp.

Rubbish truck reinforcements are coming from Melbourne to assist in the clean-up. Two rear-loading trucks should arrive by Wednesday, with a further two due to arrive by Friday.

Council itself has 12 trucks on the road and two loaders to help residents move their flood debris.

Council has a small number of Asbestos Kits available for residents. If you would like a kit or more information on hazardous materials, contact the Environmental Health Section at Council on 6670 2400. An officer will return your call and arrange to inspect the materials as soon as possible to provide you with advice.

Council would like to acknowledge the assistance of Solo Resource Recovery and A1 Skips for providing resources during this time.
