Expressions of interest open for community market operators
21 March 2017
Information workshop to be held in April
Council is seeking expressions of interest from any person or group interested in operating any of the Tweed’s seven community markets for a period of three years from 1 July 2017, at Kingscliff, Tweed Heads, Pottsville, Murwillumbah and Salt.
An information session for existing and interested operators will be held at the Council’s Murwillumbah Civic Centre at 10.30-11:30am on Monday 3 April. This session will explain the new guidelines and what Council is looking for as part of the Markets Policy and EOI evaluation process.
Mayor of Tweed, Councillor Katie Milne said markets are really important community and business hubs for the Tweed.
“Our new market guidelines encourage our market operators to provide even more opportunities for cultural and community experiences, and to become showcases for sustainable practices to further enhance their reputational appeal,” she said.
“Our markets are much loved community and tourism assets that greatly assist our local micro-businesses. With enhanced support for arts, entertainment and sustainable practices we feel that the markets will become even more popular.
“Council would love to see markets include a strong focus on live entertainers and buskers, spaces for the community to relax and mingle, and even more opportunities for local goods, services, arts, crafts, organic products, and sustainability.
“Council’s Market Management Guidelines are available to assist with submissions and contain new provisions on sale of food, waste avoidance/sustainability and enhancing community experiences.
“Council also has on exhibition amendments to its Market Policy which should be considered by interested parties in their EOI submissions.”
Interested parties can make a submission for one or more of the existing markets at Pottsville, Kingscliff (day and night) and Recreation Street, Tweed Head; and new markets at Jack Evans Boat Harbour, Knox Park Murwillumbah, and Salt Park. Existing operators are encouraged to apply.
