Initial library upgrade construction alters access
Access to the temporary Tweed Heads Library sites has changed for the next few weeks, as construction work continues on the upgrade of the nearby library building in February and early March.
Wheelchair access during this period will only be available through the Tweed Shire Council Administration Office foyer, because safety fencing currently blocks access to the external ramp.
“Contractors working on the Tweed Library expansion are cutting concrete in front of the library site, so fencing has been erected to protect the safety of library visitors,” Richmond Tweed Regional Library (RTRL) Area Librarian Selina Ryan said.
“Signs will direct library users around the fencing to steps in front of the temporary library site. However, to ensure the safety of wheelchair users and other people with impeded mobility, they will need to enter through the Council administration building front doors.”
To further assist users with impeded mobility, two accessible parking bays will be created in the carpark, immediately next to the carpark entrance from Brett Street. A new pedestrian crossing will also be created across the carpark entrance, linking the accessible parking bays to the administration office entrance.
Ms Ryan said the concrete cutting and other works during the current stage of the library upgrade could also cause significant noise and vibrations which would also cause some interruptions.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the noise and impeded access. However, this stage of work is scheduled to be completed in March, when more direct access to the temporary library site will be restored,” she said.
The Tweed library relocated to its temporary site at the Tweed Heads Civic and Cultural Centre, next to the auditorium, in January so users could continue to pick up reserved items, return resources and browse part of the Tweed Heads Library collection during the upgrade project. The temporary library is open Monday-Friday 9.30am - 5pm and Saturday 9am - 12pm.
A temporary computer café and reading room is also operating in Council’s Administration Office in Brett Street and is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 4.45pm.
Free wi-fi services are also available in and around the temporary library site.
Children’s activities began this week at Council’s Community Centre (next to Tweed Heads South Aquatic Centre) at Tweed South. Storytime will be held on Mondays at 10am and Baby Bounce on Fridays at 10am. There are a few weeks they will not be held because the centre is being used for other events, so check the RTRL website at www.rtrl.nsw.gov.au to confirm dates.
Children’s library materials will be provided from the Community Centre during scheduled Storytime and Baby Bounce sessions.
All categories of the Children and Youth Collection are available from the Richmond Tweed Mobile Library, which will stop in Wharf Street next to the library site every second Monday from 10am to 3.30pm. The next visit will be 20 February.
