Long delays on Kennedy Drive

Traffic in slow queue to clear roadworks during road reconstruction

Motorists are experiencing long delays on Kennedy Drive, Tweed Heads West, this morning as road reconstruction begins.

Road reconstruction will last 10 working days and is the final task of a five-year, $9 million upgrade of this major arterial road.

At 8.30am, it was taking half an hour to travel from Panorama Plaza at the intersection of Scenic Drive and Gull Place to through the Limosa Road lights … and it was expected to get worse.

Reconstruction of the southern side of the road was progressing well, with the heavy machinery excavating out the old road making its third and final pass near the centreline about 9.30am, putting the contractors on schedule to have that first short section built up with deep-lift asphalt to 50mm of its final height by the end of work late this afternoon.

When the machinery is working at the centreline, traffic is reduced to one-lane flow under the direction of stop / slow flagmen.

Motorists are again strongly urged to avoid Kennedy Drive if possible and travel via the alternate route of Bilambil and Terranora roads.

On Wednesday 26 October, motorists are advised to expect further congestion as the southern lane of the bridge will be closed to allow a repair of the eastern approach from 10am – 2pm. Then, all traffic will move under the direction of stop / slow flagmen on the northern lane.
