29 September 2016
Have your say - help shape your community and its future
A field of 76 candidates have been confirmed to contest the seven councillor positions available in the Tweed Shire Council election on 29 October 2016.
Candidate nominations closed at 12 noon on Wednesday 28 September with 15 groups and four individuals nominating and being allocated places on the ballot paper by the NSW Electoral Commission.
“Saturday 29 October provides the 90,000 residents of the Tweed community the opportunity to choose the elected representatives to lead the Tweed for the next four years,” Council General Manager, Troy Green said.
“The size of this field, with 76 candidates, demonstrates the enthusiasm and passion the people of the Tweed have to represent their community.
“Residents should have their say, not just because voting is compulsory, but because this is their chance to elect leaders and decision makers that have an important role in positioning the Tweed as a leader in Northern Rivers NSW for the next four years.
“This year’s election carries some extra significance with an important referendum vote on whether to increase the number of Tweed Shire councillors from seven to nine for future elections.”
