New date confirmed for Tweed Shire Council election
29 August 2016
29 October 2016 for new poll - nominations open 19 September 2016
Council has welcomed formal confirmation from the NSW Electoral Commission of the new date for the Tweed Shire Council election as well as key nomination milestones.
The new election is set for Saturday 29 October 2016 and candidates will be able to nominate from 19 September to 28 September 2016.
The poll originally scheduled for 10 September 2016 failed due to the passing of one of the candidates. As a result, the entire election process has been rescheduled.
Council’s Public Officer, Neil Baldwin, said the revised election date will allow potential candidates the opportunity to nominate and will also mean all eligible voters can ensure they are properly enrolled to vote.
“We encourage all members of the public and potential candidates to make themselves aware of the revised timeframe and milestones for the new election,” Mr Baldwin said.
“A candidate for the new Tweed election must again register as a candidate and nominate to be a candidate. Nominations open Monday 19 September and close at noon on Wednesday 28 September.”
“Eligible voters seeking to enrol need to do so before 6pm on Monday 19 September.”
The NSW Electoral Commission is proposing to create a specific Tweed election website which, once available, will be linked through Council’s website.
The existing non-residential roll has now expired, all applicants on the non-residential roll will be advised of the need to re-apply and a new non-residential roll will be established.
Key dates:
Monday 19 September 2016 close of electoral roll and nominations for candidates open.
Wednesday 28 September 2016 close of nominations for candidates (12 noon).
