Focus on ‘Our Living Culture – Past, Present and Future’

The Tweed will host the influential NSW Local Government Aboriginal Network Conference this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (24, 25 and 26 August) at Twin Towns Clubs and Resorts at Tweed Heads.

The NSW Local Government Aboriginal Network Conference acts as a forum for discussion on local government issues relating to Aboriginal communities, business and the wider community.

The theme for this year’s Conference is “Our Living Culture – Past, Present and Future”.

The aim of the conference is to provide an exciting and interesting forum for enhancing the profile of Aboriginal communities, their skills and culture and discussion on current issues such as employment strategies, enterprise and cultural development and policies.

Mayor of Tweed, Councillor Katie Milne said: “It's a very special occasion to have so many Aboriginal community leaders and delegates from all around the State gathering in Tweed for this annual conference.”

“It will probably be a long time, if ever, before such an important gathering meets in this location again. We hope to make them all feel very welcome."

A highlight of the conference will be a panel for Constitutional recognition of Aboriginal Australians featuring high profile Aboriginal and non- Aboriginal leaders.

The conference will include sessions on:

  • Aboriginal culture and heritage
  • Local government policies and procedures for Aboriginal communities and organisations
  • Social and relevant issues for Aboriginal communities
  • Question and answer panel on Aboriginal people running for local government elections.
The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, the Honourable Leslie Williams will give the keynote address on Friday 26 August at 11am.

A cultural tour will be held on Wednesday, 24 August, with delegates visiting the Tweed Regional Museum to view the Aboriginal Breastplates of the Northern Rivers exhibition, the Tweed Regional Gallery, Cram’s Farm at Doon Doon to learn about the Aboriginal significance of the site and cultural landscape and the Minjungbal Aboriginal Museum and Cultural Centre.
