Murwillumbah and Pottsville clubs benefit from federal and council grants

Two local tennis clubs have welcomed Federal and Council funding to upgrade their facilities.

Murwillumbah Tennis Club will receive $20,000 in federal funding for the replacement of wire mesh court fencing, along with a $10,000 contribution from Tweed Shire Council.

Pottsville Beach Tennis Club is set to receive $15,000 in federal funding to upgrade one of two clay courts at the facility, with Council providing an additional $10,000.

Both clubs have also pitched in funding to complete their projects.

Mayor of Tweed, Councillor Katie Milne said it was great to see the community proactively seeking to improve these facilities.

The federal grants are from the Stronger Communities Program and were announced by Member for Richmond, Justine Elliot at visits to the clubs this week.

“These courts are great assets for keeping our community healthy and having fun,” she said.

Council’s Unit Coordinator Recreation Services, Matt McCann said both clubs were great examples of sporting organisations that were proactive in providing their own funding, as well as working to secure grants when they became available.

“The clubs are providing a community service from community assets, so Council is happy to provide support,” he said.

Looking forward to new fencing at Murwillumbah Tennis Club are Member for Richmond, Justine Elliot, Murwillumbah Tennis Club board member Mohan Janda, membership registrar Lynne McMahon, vice-president Greg Fletcher and president, Gary Bewes.
